Day 24 – Collateral Beauty

“In everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.” I Thes. 5:18

In the movie Collateral Beauty, starring Will Smith, various characters learned that despite their hardships, trials, and even tragedies, there was something for which they should be grateful. The concept of collateral beauty is to notice the positive things in the midst of all the negative things. To stay in faith this is a concept that you must embrace.

The above-referenced scripture does not say “for everything give thanks” but it does say “in everything give thanks.” It is very difficult to give God thanks “for everything” since there are many things that happen in our lives for which He is not responsible at all. However, in the midst of everything, if we stopped to think, it’s possible that it could be worse and for that we should give God thanks.

If you practice doing this, you will always have thanksgiving in your heart and a praise in your mouth. You didn’t get the job you wanted but thank God that you still have the current job. Your house is too small but considering the recent natural disasters, hurricanes, fires and mudslides, you should be thankful that you have a home. You can’t afford a new car right now but thank God that the current one is operating and paid for. Even in frustrating circumstances with your children, it is so important to remember that many people are believing God to conceive a child.

When it is all said and done, regardless of what you don’t have, Paul encourages us to be content with even the bare necessities of life: “And having food and raiment let us be therewith content” (I Tim. 6:8). Content doesn’t mean complacent. Contentment means learning to be grateful for what I have until more shows up. That’s seeing the collateral beauty in every situation and under every circumstance.

Faith Stretching Exercises:

1. Stop right now and give God thanks for at least three collateral beauty things in your life.
2. Complete this sentence: “Father I am believing you for ________________ but in the meantime I praise you and thank you for _________________________ .
